The man in moon looks for a girlfriend
The Man in the Moon Looks for a Girlfriend is an experimental children’s theater play directed by Marie Gedicke and Julia Gebhardt at Theater für Niedersachsen TFN in Hildesheim, Germany. Known for its playful narrative and imaginative staging, the production required a strong visual anchor to promote its premiere. I was commissioned by the directors to design the official promotional poster for the play, managing the project from the initial concept phase through to the final print-ready layout.
The main design challenge was to capture the whimsical, experimental essence of a children’s theater piece while keeping the artwork sophisticated enough to catch the attention of parents and the public. Theater posters must convey the mood of a performance instantly; the difficulty lay in balancing the innocent, storytelling elements of the play’s title with a bold, contemporary graphic structure that stands out in busy city environments.
To achieve this, my approach focused on translating the play’s unique charm into a striking visual composition. I developed a playful yet clean layout that highlighted the core themes of curiosity and connection, utilizing deliberate color contrasts and tailored typography to evoke a sense of theatrical wonder. The final design successfully bridged the gap between childhood imagination and modern graphic design, resulting in a vibrant, engaging poster that perfectly matched the directors’ vision and resonated deeply with the local community.
