Flügel und Wunder | Wings & Wonders

Project Overview
Flügel und Wunder is an illustrated calendar for 2027, filled with cute birds, funny spiders and twelve months of small adventures.

The idea grew from a childhood memory. When I was seven, I learned that hens sit on their eggs for 21 days before the chicks hatch. So I took an egg from the fridge, wrapped it carefully in a towel, hid it under a sofa cushion and waited for my very own talking chick.

The chick never arrived.

Many years later, that memory returned while I was drawing, and slowly an entire flock appeared instead — each bird with its own personality, quirks and little adventures.

Perhaps something did hatch from that egg after all. Just a few years later than planned.

Visual Storytelling & Process
Each month introduces three bird characters and a small moment from their world — sometimes thoughtful, sometimes absurd, and often somewhere in between.

Character, gesture, colour and small visual details work together with short texts to give every bird its own personality. Although each month tells an individual story, the illustrations share a common visual language, creating one playful world that develops throughout the year.

The project combines illustration and writing from the beginning, allowing image and text to shape each other rather than treating one as an addition to the other.

Product Design & Interaction

The calendar was designed to continue its life after each month has ended.

Every monthly illustration can be detached and reused as a postcard, transforming a temporary calendar page into a small object that can be sent, given away or kept.

The A5 format works both as a wall and desk calendar, while the combination of calendar, illustration, story and postcard turns the project into more than a way of organising the year.

12 months. 12 postcards. 12 bird stories.
